A brokerage started by somebody who did twenty-four years on the job first.

Mike Rex bought his first house when he was twenty-one. The same year, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department.

He kept buying — small investment places, one at a time, while he worked. In 2005 he and his wife Corrine decided they did not want to raise their young children in Los Angeles. They looked at cities all over the western United States, chose Highlands Ranch, and Mike carried on policing with the Westminster Police Department.

He took his real estate licence and joined Keller Williams, starting with income properties and attached homes — the things he already understood as an owner. He became one of that office's most productive agents while still working full-time shifts as a police officer. Then he founded Rex Homes, and brought brokers Brandon Garcia, Reggie English and Sal Sandoval with him.

He retired from police work after twenty-four years of service.

Rex Homes LLC has been a licensed Colorado brokerage since 2018, with Mike as its responsible broker. It holds membership of the Denver Metro, Pikes Peak and Northern Colorado MLSs, and has handled property from Colorado Springs to Windsor to Fort Morgan to Grand Junction. The range is unusually wide in both directions: the firm has listed a nine-thousand-square-foot house in Castle Pines and a four-hundred-and-eighty-two-square-foot condominium in Aurora. Same brokerage, same year.

In August 2024 FOX31 Denver ran a story on HUD's Good Neighbor Next Door program, which takes half off the price of an eligible home for police officers, firefighters, teachers and EMTs. Mike was the agent they spoke to. He wanted people to know it exists, because almost nobody does — and because he used it himself in the 1990s, when he was the officer.

I did twenty-four years as a police officer — the LAPD first, then Westminster here in Colorado — and I was buying and selling property the whole time. I got my licence, worked at Keller Williams while I was still on shifts, and then started Rex Homes because I wanted to do it a different way. We work the Denver metro, the Front Range and out to Grand Junction, for first-time buyers, people moving up, and investors. If you are in a first-responder, military, teaching or healthcare job, ask me what you qualify for before you do anything else. Most people in those jobs have no idea, and it is usually worth real money.

    Twenty-four years of police work, the last of them in Colorado, and a first house bought on an officer's pay through a program written for officers. Shift schedules, public-sector salaries, what a background check feels like from the inside — that is lived, not studied.

    Good Neighbor Next Door can take fifty per cent off the list price of an eligible home for an officer, firefighter, teacher or EMT. It is a real federal program and almost nobody has heard of it. Mike told FOX31 Denver in 2024 that spreading the word is the point — he used it himself.

What is Good Neighbor Next Door?

A HUD program that sells eligible homes in specific areas at fifty per cent off the list price to full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and pre-kindergarten-through-12 teachers. You commit to living in the home for thirty-six months. Listings appear for a short window and they are easy to miss, which is most of why people never use it. Ask and we will watch for them.

Do I have to be a first responder to work with Rex Homes?

No. Rex Homes is a full-service Colorado brokerage and most of its clients are not in those jobs at all — first-time buyers, people moving up, downsizers and investors. The heroes side of it exists because Mike knows that world, not because it is a restriction.

What areas do you cover?

The Denver metro is the core — Englewood, Denver, Highlands Ranch, Castle Pines, Aurora and the south suburbs. Beyond that the firm carries Denver Metro, Pikes Peak and Northern Colorado MLS membership and has done business from Colorado Springs to Windsor to Fort Morgan to Grand Junction.
